History of Bristol Balloons

First off allow me to introduce myself, My name is David Bristol. I have been a balloon enthusiast since age 3 when I first saw a Hot Air Balloon Fly over my home in 1973.

By age 9, I was starting to build model balloons from plastic dry cleaner bags. From there I started building larger model balloons from wrapping tissue and then eventually balloon fabric.

In 1983 (at age 13) I successfully built the balloon you see on the right. It was 14,000 cubic feet in volume and it had a net lift of approximately 150 lbs. but could only carry 5 gallons of propane fuel. This balloon was sewn on my grandmothers home sewing machine in her living room.

After completing my first balloon, I would spend my summers interning with John "Tarp" Head at HEAD Balloons (A major manufacturer of type certified hot air balloons). I would do everything from assisting in cutting the fabric to sewing, weaving baskets and even helping to build the Burners. This was a great learning experience for me and I still work closely with HEAD Balloons today.

Another thing I learned at HEAD Balloons was how to fly. Tarp Head, along with Master Flight Instructor Craig McDonald, gave me flight instruction and helped me to achieve my FAA Commercial Lighter than Air Rating (Commercial Pilots License). Tarp Head also first exposed me to flying light airplanes. From there I would go on to achieve my Commercial Fixed Wing License and my ATP Certificate (Airline Transport Pilot Rating).

Today in addition to Balloon Design, sales and Advertising, I also help people achieve their dream of flight. In the summer of 2020 I was a part of the team that assisted young JT Head (Tarp's Son) become the youngest pilot in the world at only 8 years old!

JT's world record was recognized by the Balloon Federation of America and young JT's story traveled all across America and around the world and all over the media including French, German TV and BBC. The special Balloon that JT Flew is one that I designed and built.

In addition to being a pilot for Bristol Balloons, I am a Commercial Airline pilot for the worlds largest airline.
